Sporting Kansas City goalie Eric Kronberg will undergo sports hernia surgery on Tuesday and is expected to miss up to eight weeks while recovering, the Major League Soccer club said Thursday.

Kronberg, 28, allowed five goals in four appearances in 2011, his sixth MLS season. He is the second-longest tenured player on Kansas City's roster after being drafted in the fourth round of the 2006 MLS SuperDraft.

He recorded his first career MLS shutout in a scoreless draw at Toronto, and also started eight MLS Reserve League matches in 2011, posting three shutouts.

Kronberg has suffered from the injury since June and is expected to return to training by the start of the 2012 preseason.
