Seattle's Aardsma becomes free agent

The Mariners outrighted pitcher David Aardsma on Monday, and Seattle's former closer opted to become a free agent.

Aardsma did not pitch in 2011 after going under the knife in January to repair a torn labrum of his left hip, then had season-ending Tommy John surgery in July.

The right-hander went 0-6 with 31 saves and a 3.44 earned run average in 53 games in 2010 and also saved 38 games for Seattle the season before.

The Mariners also announced outfielder Franklin Gutierrez and Adam Moore have been activated from 60-day disabled list, while pitcher Jeff Gray has been claimed off waivers by the Minnesota Twins.
