Rhode Island baseball player dies

University of Rhode Island baseball player Joseph Paul Ciancola passed away Thursday following a medical emergency during a team preseason conditioning workout, the Atlantic 10 Conference said in a statement Friday.

The cause of death has not been determined.

Ciancola, who was 20 years old, was rushed to South County Hospital in South Kingstown, Rhode Island after collapsing during a preseason conditioning workout on Monday and later transferred to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, RI before passing away.

"We were very saddened to learn Thursday of the passing of Mr. Ciancola, who was young and in the prime of his life," Atlantic 10 commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade said in a statement. "Our condolences go out to his family and the entire Rhode Island campus community. The thoughts and prayers of the Atlantic 10 Conference and its membership will be with all of them."
