Manchester United rebounded from its humiliating league loss to Manchester City by cruising to a 3-0 victory over fourth-tier club Aldershot in the League Cup on Tuesday night, while Arsenal overcame Premier League rival Bolton 2-1 to advance to the quarterfinals.

Dimitar Berbatov, Michael Owen and Antonio Valencia scored United's goals at Aldershot after being left out of the lineup that lost 6-1 Sunday.

"Sometimes you need a kick in the teeth to get going again," Owen said. We were under a little bit of pressure after the result at the weekend. We had United's reputation to look after."

Arsenal, which lost last season's League Cup final to Birmingham, rallied against visiting Bolton on goals by Andrei Arshavin and Chu-Young Park. Fabrice Muamba had put Bolton ahead.

Arsenal center back Thomas Vermaelen played his first match in two months following ankle surgery, but picked up a calf injury toward the end of the match. Manager Arsene Wenger said he didn't think the injury was serious, but that Vermaelen would likely miss the Premier League match against Chelsea on Saturday.

In Tuesday's other cup matches, Cardiff beat Burnley 1-0 while second-tier leader Southampton lost 2-0 to Crystal Palace.

There are four all-Premier League matches in the competition on Wednesday.

Man City, which is five points clear at the top of the Premier League, travels to Wolverhampton Wanderers, Chelsea is at Everton, Stoke hosts Liverpool and Blackburn faces Newcastle.

MADRID (AP) — Xavi Hernandez scored on a free kick in the 33rd minute, celebrating his record 392nd league appearance for Barcelona with a 1-0 victory at Grenada. Xavi moved one past Migueli on the Barcelona league appearance list.

Barcelona forward Pedro Rodriguez sprained his left ankle and will be sidelined for up to two weeks. Coach Pep Guardiola gave youth team player Isaac Cuenca his first start.

Defending champion Barcelona (6-0-3) moved into first with 21 points, ahead of Levante (6-0-2), which hosts Real Sociedad on Wednesday, and Real Madrid (6-1-1), which hosts Villarreal.

TURIN, Italy (AP) — Juventus moved into first place by beating Fiorentina 2-1 on goals by Leonardo Bonucci and Alessandro Matri.

Bonucci scored on a rebound following a corner kick in the 13th. After Stevan Jovetic tied it in the 57th, Matri scored his third goal in two games in the 65th.

Juventus (4-0-4) moved one point ahead of Udinese (4-0-3), which visits Napoli (3-2-2). Also Wednesday, defending champion AC Milan (3-2-2) seeks its third consecutive win against Parma, and Inter Milan (2-4-1) plays at Atalanta.

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Mario Goetze scored one goal and set up another to help Borussia Dortmund reach the third round of the German Cup with a 2-0 victory over second-division Dynamo Dresden.

Goetze delivered the corner kick that Robert Lewandowski headed into the net for Dortmund's first goal in the 30th minute, then scored n the 65th when he broke through on the right flank and slotted inside the far post.

The kickoff was delayed by 15 minutes after about 4,500 Dresden fans clashed with police outside the stadium.
