Struggling Jets, Senators clash in Ottawa

A pair of struggling teams will meet tonight in Ottawa, as the Senators host the Winnipeg Jets for a clash at Scotiabank Place.

The Senators and Jets each have just one victory on the season, with Ottawa going 1-5-0 and Winnipeg notching a 1-3-1 mark.

The Jets, who are back in Winnipeg after the franchise was moved to Atlanta this summer, recorded the first win under their new name with Monday's 2-1 victory over visiting Pittsburgh. However, the Jets were dealt a fourth loss in five games Wednesday evening, as Toronto rallied from two goals down to defeat the Jets 4-3 in a shootout. Joffrey Lupul scored twice in regulation and posted the shootout winner for the host Maple Leafs.

Tobias Enstrom and Alex Burmistrov lit the lamp for the Jets and Mark Scheifele netted his first career NHL goal.

"You know it was definitely special to get it here in front of a bunch of people that came to the game," Scheifele admitted about his first career marker. "Still, it would have been nicer to get the win."

Ondrej Pavelec had 20 saves for the Jets, but he allowed tallies to Lupul and Matt Frattin in the shootout to take the loss.

Jets defenseman Ron Hainsey missed Wednesday's game with an upper-body injury and he is questionable for tonight's tilt.

The Senators, meanwhile, have been simply dreadful in their own zone this season, surrendering a whopping 30 goals in just six games.

Ottawa allowed seven goals for the second time in three games in its last trip to the ice, as Philadelphia dismantled the Senators in a 7-2 blowout at Scotiabank Place. Flyers rookie Matt Read burned the Senators for a goal and three assists in the lopsided contest.

Jason Spezza and Erik Karlsson scored for the Senators, who have been outscored by a 30-16 margin on the season.

Alex Auld was pulled after one period, giving up four goals on 10 shots to take the loss. No. 1 netminder Craig Anderson finished by allowing three scores on 20 shots. Anderson will get the start in net tonight for the Sens.

Senators defenseman Sergei Gonchar is expected to be back for tonight's contest after missing Tuesday's game with an ankle injury. The veteran blueliner has two assists on the season and is a key part of Ottawa's power- play attack.

The Senators split four games with the Thrashers last year and the Winnipeg franchise has taken seven of the last 11 encounters in this series.
