Azarenka, Ivanovic, Goerges advance in Luxembourg

A trio of seeded women -- up Julia - were among Wednesday's winners at the $220,000 Luxembourg Open.

The top-seeded Azarenka handled Czech Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-2, 6-4 and a fifth-seeded Ivanovic bested France's Virginie Razzano 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 in some opening-round action on the indoor hardcourts at CK Sportcenter Kockelscheuer.

The Serbian Ivanovic captured this Luxembourg event back 2007.

A sixth-seeded Goerges, meanwhile, continued her fine play at this tournament with a 6-4, 6-2 second-round victory over Austrian Tamira Paszek. The German Goerges lost to Italian Roberta Vinci in last year's finale.

A pair of seeds exited the draw on Day 3, as Latvian Anastasija Sevastova took out No. 4 Flavia Pennetta of Italy 6-3, 6-2 in the first round, while No. 7 Maria Kirilenko of Russia pulled out of her second-round match against Czech Iveta Benesova, citing a right ankle injury.

In other Wednesday action, Romanian Monica Niculescu outlasted Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-1 to reach the quarterfinals, while Dutch qualifier Bibiane Schoofs and Romanian Simona Halep posted opening-round wins. Halep straight-setted 41-year-old Japanese Kimiko Date-Krumm, 6-4, 7-5.

In some second-round play on Thursday, the Belarusian Azarenka will battle Italian Alberta Brianti and Ivanovic will encounter British qualifier Anne Keothavong.

The 2011 Luxembourg titlist will collect $37,000.
