Kirilenko wins Luxembourg opener

Russian Maria Kirilenko was Monday's lone seeded performer and winner at the $220,000 Luxembourg Open.

The seventh-seeded Kirilenko was leading Carla Suarez Navarro 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 3-0 when the Spaniard retired due to a right ankle injury on the indoor hardcourts at CK Sportcenter Kockelscheuer.

Up next for Kirilenko will be veteran Czech left-hander Iveta Benesova.

In other Day-1 action, Austrian Tamira Paszek pasted Russian Ekaterina Makarova 6-2, 6-2, while Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues double-bageled helpless wild card and Luxembourg's own Anne Kremer 6-0, 6-0 and Benesova overcame France's Pauline Parmentier 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Kremer turned 36 on Monday.

This week's top seeds are Belarusian star Victoria Azarenka and Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Third seed and 2009 runner-up Sabine Lisicki of Germany pulled out of the draw on Monday, citing an illness.

Italian Roberta Vinci, who is not defending her title this week, bested German Julia Goerges in last year's Luxembourg finale.

The 2011 Luxembourg titlist will collect $37,000.
