Cleveland Browns defensive end Marcus Benard will be sidelined for the rest of the season after breaking his hand in a motorcycle crash, it was confirmed Wednesday.
Head coach Pat Shurmur said the team's sack leader from 2010 had been placed on the reserve non-football injury list.
He said he cautioned his players in the wake the accident to avoid "risky behavior."
Benard was charged Tuesday with driving with a suspended license and reckless operation following the crash on a Cleveland highway one day earlier. He is due to appear in court Oct 18.
Police said Benard lost control, crashed into a guardrail and was thrown nearly 250 feet before landing on the pavement. The three-wheel motorcycle then traveled across all four lanes of Interstate 71 before coming to a stop.
Benard remains hospitalized at the Cleveland Clinic.
The 26-year-old led the Browns with 7.5 sacks last year, when he played in 15 games and made his first two career starts.
Benard, who was undrafted out of Jackson State in 2009, has played as a backup in all four of Cleveland's games this season.
