The 36-year-old has won 37 international medals and seven national singles titles. He finished fourth at the 2006 Olympics in Torino, Italy.
"It was a great run and I'm going to miss the team and the organization," Benshoof said. "Hopefully I can stay involved in one capacity or another."
Benshoof underwent back surgery in December 2009 to correct a bulging disc and a herniated disc, and had another surgery in 2010. He has not felt comfortable enough to return to competition, according to a release from USA luge.
