Faxon wins rain-shortened Insperity Championship

Brad Faxon was declared the winner of the Insperity Championship on Sunday when heavy rain forced the cancellation of the final round.

The tournament was shortened to 36 holes and Faxon, the second-round leader, earned his first Champions Tour victory in only his sixth start on the over-50 circuit.

Faxon's seven-under 65 Saturday was enough to give him the title at 10-under 134.

Several players teed off on Sunday, but heavy rain forced officials to suspend play. Golfers went back to The Woodlands Country Club, but the course was unplayable and the decision was made to cancel the round.

Many of the last 10 groups on Sunday didn't hit a shot.

Faxon turned 50 on August 1 and didn't post a top-10 in his first five Champions Tour starts. He won eight times in his PGA Tour career, but not since 2005.

Tommy Armour III finished second at nine-under 135, while Eduardo Romero took third at eight-under par.

Champions Tour money leader Tom Lehman, Jay Haas and reigning U.S. Senior Open champion Olin Browne shared fourth place at seven-under 137.
