In a move to solidify its ailing defense, Freiburg announced Thursday the signing of defender Andres Hinkel on a free transfer.
Freiburg has conceded 22 goals thus far in the Bundesliga season, more than any other team in the top German division.
Hinkel, 29, signs a one-year contract with Freiburg after departing Celtic during the summer. His previous stints with Stuttgart and Sevilla, along with his 21 caps for the German national team, will provide Freiburg with some much needed experience along the backline.
"In Andreas Hinkel, we're getting an experienced professional who will help the team move forward," Freiburg sporting director Dirk Dufner said, according to the club's website. "We're pleased to have strengthened our defense with a player who has proven his abilities time and again as a full-back."
