Pat Shurmur has bounced from one coast to the other in his coaching career. However, his roots remain deep in the Midwest, where family and football are intertwined.

Cleveland's new coach — the team's fifth since 1999 — appreciates the undying passion of Browns fans. He can also understand their pain. Shurmur, hired in January by team president Mike Holmgren, can't imagine doing anything but teaching and leading a team and he seems perfectly suited for the Browns.

He's genuine, smart and sensible and Shurmur's confidence has made a strong impression on his players, many of whom never bought into Eric Mangini's plan.

Now, Shurmur must win.
