Charles, Bonner earn WNBA weekly honors

Center Tina Charles of the Connecticut Sun and guard/forward DeWanna Bonner of the Phoenix Mercury have been named the WNBA's Eastern and Western Conference players of the week, respectively, for games played from August 29 through September 4.

Charles grabbed her fourth weekly award of the year and fifth of her career with her conference-leading 12.7 rebounds and league-leading 2.67 blocks per game, while leading the Sun to a 2-1 record.

The 2010 WNBA Rookie of the Year became the fifth WNBA player to record a triple-double when she scored 10 points, snatched 16 rebounds and dished out 10 assists in a win over conference rival Indiana on September 2.

Bonner is the fourth Mercury player to earn the Player of the Week honors this season, a new WNBA record. The WNBA's Sixth Woman of the Year in 2009 and 2010 started twice in place of forward Penny Taylor, who was out due to back spasms.

She tied a career high by scoring 25 points in a 96-74 win against Tulsa and followed that up by netting 23 against San Antonio to post her first back-to- back 20-point games of her career. Phoenix went 2-1 during the week.

Other candidates for the weekly honors included Atlanta's Angel McCoughtry, Chicago's Sylvia Fowles, Los Angeles' Candace Parker, New York's Cappie Pondexter, Phoenix's Diana Taurasi and Candice Dupree, Seattle's Swin Cash and Tulsa's Tiffany Jackson.
