Morgantown, WV – The season opener between West Virginia and Marshall was delayed on two separate occasions by a severe weather storm before finally being shortened by officials at 10:24 p.m. (et).
The first delay of roughly three hours occurred after Tavon Austin returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown to put the 24th-ranked Mountaineers ahead, 27-13, with five minutes left in the third.
Fans at Mountaineer Field were told by officials to exit the stadium and seek cover from the impending lightning storm.
When play resumed, WVU's Vernard Roberts ran in for a one-yard score on the second snap of the fourth quarter before another storm caused a second evacuation.
Despite 14:36 remaining in regulation, the game was called with West Virginia earning a 34-13 victory.
The events came one day after several college football games, most notably the Notre Dame-USF tilt in South Bend, Indiana, were put on hold because of lightning.
