In the final hour of the transfer window, Liverpool midfielder Raul Meireles handed in a transfer request and completed a move to Chelsea on Wednesday.

The Portugal international was the subject of a failed bid from Chelsea on Tuesday, but the Blues apparently upped their bid with the window set to close and announced that Meireles has joined the club on a four-year contract.

"Chelsea Football club is delighted to announce the signing of Raul Meireles from Liverpool on a four-year contract," read a club statement.

The 28-year-old made 138 appearances for FC Porto before enjoying a successful campaign with Liverpool last season that saw him score five goals in 35 matches.

Meireles has also been capped 47 times by Portugal, scoring eight goals.
