BALTIMORE (Reuters) - Jose Bautista bashed his Major League-leading 39th home run of the season and the Toronto Blue Jays crushed the hapless Baltimore Orioles in a 13-0 blowout on Wednesday.
Matching a season-high 20 hits with four homers, the Blue Jays bullied former team mate Jo-Jo Reyes off the mound after plundering seven runs in less than three innings in his first start against Toronto since the team waived him earlier this month.
"We were patient with him and we waited for our pitch in the zone and he gave it to us," Toronto hitter Eric Thames told reporters of Reyes. "We didn't miss, and that was the biggest difference."
The offensive firepower helped rookie pitcher Henderson Alvarez earn the first win of his career, the 21-year-old Venezuelan tossing eight scoreless innings for just three hits.
Alvarez's effort on the mound made him the youngest Toronto starter to win a game since Phil Huffman in 1979.
"He just pitched a phenomenal game," said Blue Jays bench coach Don Wakamatsu, who is filling in while manager John Farrell recovers from pneumonia.
"I think it breathes a little life into the offense. We've been swinging the bats better lately."
Mired at the bottom of the American League East, the Orioles (54-80) managed just four hits in their third loss of the last four games.
Toronto's long list of standouts included Edwin Encarnacion who had four hits, three runs and two RBIs, while Thames and Yunel Escobar also finished with four hits apiece.
