Mariners place Smoak on DL

The Seattle Mariners placed first baseman day disabled list Saturday.

The 24-year-old Smoak was hit in the face by a ball on a bad-hop grounder in the second inning of Friday's game. An X-ray revealed that he has a non- displaced fracture on his nose and a hairline fracture in his left cheek.

On the season, Smoak is batting .220 with 12 home runs and 44 RBI in 101 games. He missed seven game from August 3-10 with a sore right thumb.

Also on Saturday, the team selected the contract of outfielder Wily Mo Pena from Triple-A Tacoma and designated pitcher Luke French for assignment.

Pena began the season with the Arizona Diamondbacks, but was designated for assignment on July 15 and released on July 24 after batting just .196 with five home runs and seven RBI in 17 games. He was signed by the Mariners on July 27.

French has spent the 2011 season with Tacoma and in 23 games he is 8-8 with a 6.12 earned run average.
