The Calgary Flames signed defenceman Scott Hannan to a one-year, US$1-million contract Saturday.
Hannan from Richmond, B.C., split last season between the Colorado Avalanche and Washington Capitals and will add some leadership to Calgary's defence.
"Scott not only brings a wealth of experience to our blue-line, but he also brings a great deal of knowledge about the Western Conference in general and our Division in particular," said Flames general manager Jay Feaster. "Just as importantly, he has demonstrated his commitment to our organization and his desire to be a part of our team by agreeing to a contract that enables us to fit him under the salary cap."
The gritty, shut down defenceman has accumulated 185 points and 430 penalty minutes in 830 career NHL games. He has also played 82 career playoff games. Hannan was originally selected in the first round of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, 23rd overall, by the San Jose Sharks.
He was an all-star for the Western Conference during the 2003–2004 season and a member of the Canadian team that won the World Cup in 2004.
