Dirks finished 4-for-4 with a walk, while Wilson Betemit was 3-for-4 and cracked a two-run homer for the AL Central-leading Tigers, who have won two in a row.

Brad Penny (8-9) gave up four runs on seven hits and a walk in 5 1/3 innings, taking his first win in four starts. Jose Valverde worked a scoreless ninth to earn his 34th save of the season.

J.J. Hardy smacked two home runs and collected three RBI for the Orioles, who have lost 11 of their last 14 contests. Vladimir Guerrero added an RBI single.

Troy Patton (0-1) pitched 2 2/3 relief innings, and was tagged with the loss after giving up the decisive run.
