The 1989 rendition of the Stanley Cup Final featured the regular-season's two best teams in the NHL. During the 1988-89 regular season, the Calgary Flames and Montreal Canadiens were the League's top clubs, as the former owned the best record in the Smythe Division of the Campbell Conference, while the latter conquered the Adams Division of the Prince of Wales Conference with 115 and 117 points, respectively. It was only fitting that the two franchises would meet to battle for Lord Stanley's Cup, which still represents the last time two top-seeded teams advanced to the Cup Final.

In one of the more historic battles Final battles, the Flames prevailed in six games against the Canadiens, becoming the first relocated NHL team to capture the Stanley Cup.

Through the first three games, the Habs controlled the series, 2-1, after a 4-3 double overtime win in Game 3. From that potentially momentum-capturing point, the Flames burned through the next three games. Led by Doug Gilmour and his two-goal effort in Game 6, the Flames skated away hoisting the Cup.

The most memorable hoist belonged to co-captain eventual NHL Hall-of-Famer, Lanny McDonald. It took 18 seasons, but McDonald -- who collected 500 goals and 500-plus assists during his tenure in the League -- finally got his chance to hang up his skates as a champion. McDonald went on to retire the following season.

Impressive feats didn't end with Gilmour's clutch performance or McDonald's final hoorah. Flames defenseman Al MacInnis stole the show throughout the 1989 playoff run. MacInnis went on to win the Conn Smythe Trophy, awarded to the playoff MVP, with 31 points and, in the process, became the first blueliner to have the most points during the postseason.
