NEW YORK (Reuters) - Edmonton Oilers goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin will be spending some time in jail after dropping an appeal of his 30-day sentence on Tuesday for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Khabibulin, found guilty last August on three charges of driving under the influence and speeding near his Arizona home in February 2010, will serve 15 days in jail and the other half under house arrest, his attorney told the Arizona Republic.
"Once I have completed these obligations, I eagerly anticipate a timely return for training camp where I will strive to be the best player, teammate and citizen possible," Khabibulin said in a statement released by the Oilers.
Khabibulin will have to wear an ankle bracelet and undergo random alcohol testing, but will be allowed to leave the house for 12 hours a day for hockey-related activities, according to the paper. NHL training camps are set to open in September.
The Russian netminder, who has also played for Winnipeg, Phoenix, Tampa Bay and Chicago in 15 NHL seasons, registered a 10-32-4 record with a 3.40 goals-against average and two shutouts in 47 games last year.
