Detroit general manager Ken Holland didn't waste much time in finding a No. 2 goalie to replace the now retired Chris Osgood. The Red Wings on Wednesday announced that they have signed Ty Conklin to a one-year contract to be the backup for Jimmy Howard.

Conklin, 35, returns to Detroit after spending the last two seasons with the St. Louis Blues. Conklin played for the Wings in 2008-09 and went 25-11-2 with a 2.51 goals-against average and .909 save percentage.

Osgood on Tuesday credited Conklin with helping steer the Red Wings' ship during the 2008-09 season as he battled to find his game again. Conklin made one appearance in the 2009 playoffs, but was mainly the backup to Osgood as the Red Wings made it to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final before losing to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Conklin has also played for the Penguins, Blue Jackets, Sabres and Oilers. He has won 91 games, including 16 by way of a shutout, in 200 total NHL appearances. He has a 2.64 GAA and .908 save percentage.
