NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Philadelphia Phillies put All-Star third baseman Placido Polanco on the 15-day disabled list due to lower back inflammation and activated reliever Ryan Madson, the National League East leaders said Friday.

The 35-year-old Polanco, who is hitting .274 with four home runs and 39 RBIs in 83 games, was voted in by fans to start at third base in Major League Baseball's All-Star game but did not play in Tuesday's contest due to his injury.

His move to the disabled list is retroactive to July 5.

Madson has not pitched for the Phillies since June 18 due to an injured right hand. The 30-year-old right-hander is 3-1 with 15 saves and a 2.03 ERA in 31 appearances this season.

The Phillies also said they brought up right-hander Vance Worley from Triple-A to replace pitcher Scott Mathieson, who was optioned to the minors.

Worley is scheduled to start for the visiting Phillies on Friday against the New York Mets.
