CALGARY, Alberta (Reuters) - The Calgary Flames signed Brendan Morrison to a one-year, $1.25 million deal on Friday, believing the experienced forward can offer plenty to the team when he returns from a season-ending knee injury.
Morrison, who is not expected to be ready for the start of the National Hockey League's regular season as he recovers from knee surgery, had nine goals and 34 assists for 43 points in 66 games with the Flames last season.
"His versatility, hockey sense and ability to fill so many roles throughout our line-up make him an important contributor, and we value his role as one of our on and off ice leaders," Flames General Manager Jay Feaster said in a statement.
"When he is cleared for game action we are confident he will make a significant impact to our success. We are a better and deeper team with Brendan back in the fold."
Morrison's 2010-11 season came to an end when he suffered a knee injury during a game against Chicago in March. He left the game midway through the third period and did not return.
In 13 seasons, the former second-round draft pick has 590 points in 895 games with New Jersey, Vancouver, Anaheim, Dallas, Washington and Calgary.
