NHL commissioner Gary Bettman confirmed the news ahead of Game 1 of the final and said Brendan Shanahan will take over the job. Shanahan will also oversee a committee on player safety.
Campbell had already been excused from making any rulings during the Vancouver-Boston championship series — just as he was any time the Bruins were involved in a decision from the league.
The former NHL coach and player became the league's senior vice-president and director of hockey operations in 1998 and was largely responsible for handling suspensions and fines.
Campbell will continue to work for the league.
