With the San Jose Sharks leading 1-0 midway through the third period, Filppula picked up a secondary assist on Henrik Zetterberg's tying goal -- although he did most of the work by putting a move on defenseman Jason Demers -- then scored the winner 2:54 later as the Red Wings staved off elimination for a third straight game.
Detoit's 3-1 victory Tuesday night at Joe Louis Arena sets up a potentially historic Game 7 on Thursday night in San Jose. If the Red Wings win, they'll be the fourth team in NHL history to win a series after going down 3-0.
Filppula had 0 points in 5 games before coming to life in the final period of the elimination game. Following the game, he talked with the media:
Q: What does this second straight comeback win say about your team?
A: I think it tells you a lot. We have a really good group. We've been playing better every game since th e playoffs have been going on. That's the main thing. Hopefully we can keep it going for one more game this series.
Q: You said this morning you felt confident, but to finally get rewarded with some points, do you feel redeemed a little bit?
A: I just feel good that we won. That's the main thing. During these games when we're winning, it doesn't matter who gets the goals. I'm happy to help the team. That's good.
Q: What was the reason for the way you guys came out and took the game to them?
A: We skated well today and we were able to spend some time in their end and create some chances that way. It was an even game all the way to the end. That's the way it should be.
Q: Was it a little bit deflating when Logan Couture scored to put the Sharks up 1-0 in the third?
A: We didn't really want to see that, but I thought we came back really well after that. We were able to create some chances. It was a good thing we were able to get those two goals pretty fast there to get in the lead.
Q: How about that cross-ice backhand pass by Pavel Datsyuk on your winner?
A: Yeah, it was a really good pass. That's the way he plays. He makes those really amazing plays. When you;'re out there with him, there's always a chance you're going to get it. Luckily it went in.
