New Mexico head coach Steve Alford says he was disappointed to learn that former star guard Dairese Gary was arrested over the weekend on suspicion of driving drunk.

The 22-year-old senior was arrested early Saturday by Albuquerque police after they received a call about a car smashing into mailboxes at an apartment complex.

Police say Gary did poorly on a field sobriety test and his blood alcohol content was twice the legal limit.

Gary was the team's most valuable player last season.

Gary's arrest comes a week after player Chad Adams was arrested for DWI. Alford suspended Adams for the first four games of next season.

Alford says the team will use the arrests as an opportunity to educate players and the community about the dangers of drinking and driving.
