The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Friday they have signed Matt Frattin, the NCAA's top goal-scorer this season while playing with the University of North Dakota, to a two-year entry-level contract.
The Leafs selected Frattin with their second choice (No. 99) in the 2007 Entry Draft. He is expected to be in the lineup for the Maple Leafs when they host the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night in their season finale.
Frattin, a 23-year-old native of Edmonton, Alta., was a finalist for the 2011 Hobey Baker Award, given annually to the top player in college hockey. Miami of Ohio's Andy Miele, who signed with Phoenix last weekend, won the award Friday night.
Frattin played 44 games for the Fighting Sioux this season and led the NCAA with 36 goals. He also ranked first on North Dakota in points (60), game-winning goals (6), power-play goals (10) and shorthanded goals (3). He led North Dakota to the WCHA regular season and playoff titles, and a berth into the NCAA Frozen Four -- the Fighting Sioux lost 2-0 to Michigan on Thursday.
