The Washington Capitals wrapped up the top seed in the Eastern Conference for the second straight season on Friday night -- by doing nothing.
The Caps were assured of the first seed when the Philadelphia Flyers lost 4-3 in overtime at Buffalo. The single point gives the Flyers 104 -- three behind Washington as the teams prepare for their regular-season finales on Saturday.
Washington visits Florida and the Flyers host the New York Islanders.
The Flyers need a win to assure themselves of the Atlantic Division title and the No. 2 seed. Pittsburgh pulled even with the Flyers by beating the Islanders 4-3 in a shootout -- but the Flyers have five more non-shootout wins. They will win the division by winning or matching the Penguins' outcome in Pittsburgh's season-finale at Atlanta on Sunday.
Buffalo became the seventh team in the East to clinch a playoff berth -- the Sabres were actually assured of making the postseason by getting to overtime. The win gives them 94 points, the same as sixth-place Montreal, which had three more non-shootout wins. Both teams end their seasons on the road Saturday night -- Buffalo at Columbus and Montreal at Toronto.
