LHP Oliver Perez, Nationals get minor league deal

Pitcher Oliver Perez and the Washington Nationals have reached agreement on a minor league contract.

Agent Scott Boras confirms Wednesday's deal. It comes two days after the New York Mets released the left-hander despite owing him $12 million. If Perez makes the Nationals, they will be responsible for only $414,000.

The Mets cut Perez two days after he gave up consecutive home runs to a pair of Washington minor leaguers.

The 29-year-old Perez had an 8.38 ERA this spring in 9 2-3 innings. The Mets were trying to see whether he'd fit as their situational lefty.

This move reunites Perez with Spin Williams, the Nationals' pitching coordinator. Williams was the pitching coach in Pittsburgh when Perez had success with the Pirates.
