WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Kevin Thompson scored 22 points and Morgan State upset top-seeded Bethune-Cookman 61-48 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference semifinal Friday night.
Morgan State (17-13), the fourth seed, led most of the way, and never trailed by more than two points. Thompson's layup with 6:08 left in the first half gave the Bears the lead for good at 25-23. Thompson and Larry Bastfield, who added 15 points, combined to make 15 of 23 shots as Morgan State shot 24 of 44 from the field (54.5 percent) and advanced to Saturday's championship, with an NCAA tournament automatic bid at stake.
Bethune-Cookman (21-12) struggled. The Wildcats came into the game having won eight straight since Morgan State beat them 65-57 on Feb. 7, but made only 19 of 49 shots (38.8 percent). C.J. Reed, their leading scorer this season at 19.3 points a game, made only 4 of 17 shots, yet led the team with 13 points.
