Arsenal, Man City reach FA Cup quarterfinals

Nicklas Bendtner had the second three-goal game of his Arsenal career, helping the Gunners rout third-tier Leyton Orient 5-0 in a fifth-round FA Cup replay on Wednesday night. Manchester City eased past Aston Villa 3-0 to also reach the quarterfinals.

Marouane Chamakh and Gael Clichy also scored at Emirates Stadium as Arsenal advanced to a quarterfinal matchup against Manchester United on March 12. Leyton Orient had forced a replay with a 1-1 tie on Feb. 20.

"It was important that we had a response tonight after what happened at the weekend, and we did it in a professional way," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said, referring to Sunday's 2-1 loss to Birmingham in the League Cup final.

Bendtner also had three goals against Porto in the Champions League in March last year.

City won on goals by Yaya Toure, Mario Balotelli and David Silva and will host second-tier Reading in the quarters on March 13. Midfielder Michael Bradley, son of U.S. coach Bob Bradley, made his first start for Aston Villa and played until the 71st minute.

City is seeking its first major trophy since winning the League Cup in 1976.

"We knew before the game we have a great chance in the FA Cup to go back to Wembley after a long time," City defender Pablo Zabaleta said.

In the other quarterfinals, West Ham is at Stoke and Bolton at Birmingham.

VALENCIA, Spain (AP) — Lionel Messi scored his 43rd goal of the season in the 77th minute, giving Barcelona a 1-0 victory at Valencia that extended its lead over second-place Real Madrid to 10 points.

Adriano picked out Messi with a pass as he sped into the area. Goalkeeper Vicente Guaita got a piece of Messi's left-footed shot but not enough to prevent Messi's league-leading 27th goal.

Guaita stopped Messi four times earlier and made a clutch save on David Villa, who played at Valencia for the first time since leaving at the end of last season for Barcelona.

Xavi Hernandez returned from a leg injury and Daniel Alves from a suspension for yellow-card accumulation. Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola, who made the trip despite a back injury, didn't start Pedro Rodriguez and moved Andres Iniesta to forward.

Barcelona (23-1-2) has 71 points, followed by Real Madrid (19-2-4) with 61, Valencia (15-5-6) with 51 and Villarreal (15-6-5) with 50. Real Madrid hosts Malaga (6-14-5) on Thursday.

Giuseppe Rossi scored off a through ball from Cani in the 22nd minute to lead Villarreal over Hercules 1-0 and end a four-game league winless streak. The New Jersey-born Rossi has 22 goals this season, including 13 in the league.

Hercules hasn't scored an away goal since Oct. 24 — a stretch of 11 games.

Ikechukwu Uche scored his first goal since May 2009 to give Zaragoza a 2-1 win over Athletic Bilbao, which has lost four straight. Uche, sidelined for most of the past two seasons after two left knee injuries, was in tears as he celebrated.
