Allen leads No. 24 Temple over GW

WASHINGTON – Lavoy Allen scored 19 points and had a season-high 16 rebounds, Khalif Wyatt had 14 points and Ramone Moore added 11 as No. 24 Temple overcame a horrific first 10 minutes and beat George Washington 57-41 on Saturday.

After scoring just eight points in the opening 10 minutes, Temple (22-6, 12-2 Atlantic 10) finally took the lead for good when they held George Washington to just two points over the final 11:22.

George Washington (15-13, 8-6) led 39-38 with 11:23 to play, and the Owls, winners of nine of 10, outscored the Colonials 19-2 to win going away.

George Washington, which shot just 18.8 percent in the second half, was led by Dwayne Smith with 12 points.

The 41 points were a season low for the Colonials, who had won three straight .

Allen, Temple's all-time leading rebounder, was effective on both ends — hitting 8 of 12 from the field, and his offense was needed since the Owls were coming off their worst loss of the season — a 17-point defeat at No. 1 Duke on Wednesday. In the early minutes Saturday, it certainly appeared that Temple was suffering some hangover from its lackluster performance.

In their nightmarish beginning, the Owls missed 16 of their first 18 field goal attempts and quickly fell behind 20-8. They didn't crack double figures until more than halfway through the first half. After George Washington took a 22-10 lead on Aaron Ware's layup with 7:33 to play in the opening 20 minutes, Temple crawled back into the game. Allen scored 10 straight points for the Owls as they got within 26-23 at halftime.

It was somewhat remarkable that Temple trailed by just three at the half since they shot just 24.2 percent.

After the Colonials' Nemanja Mikic hit a 3-pointer to make it 29-23, the Owls scored 10 straight points — including a 3-pointer and layup by Allen to take a 33-29 lead with 16:47 left.

The Colonials, who haven't beaten a ranked team at home since they defeated Xavier on Jan. 14, 1998, scored just four points rest of the first half once they took the big lead. With 44 seconds left, Moore was fouled by Tim Johnson, and words were exchanged between the teams as Moore prepared to take his free throws.

Temple, which has won 23 of its last 27 games played at George Washington, played without junior forward Scootie Randall, its second-leading scorer and rebounder, who missed his third straight game with an injured right foot.
