Manchester United's unbeaten start to the Premier League season ended Saturday with a startling 2-1 defeat at last-place Wolverhampton.

The upset came on the highest-scoring day in Premier League history, with 41 goals from eight games.

United had been unbeaten in 29 Premier League matches since April, equaling a club record partly set in its triple championship season of 1998-99 season.

Nani put league-leading United ahead in the third minute but George Elokobi and Kevin Doyle scored before halftime for the Wolves.

"We didn't get going really in the second half today," United manager Alex Ferguson said.

Second-place Arsenal was unable to take full advantage of United's defeat, squandering a 4-0 halftime lead to draw 4-4 at Newcastle. United is four points ahead of Arsenal.

Carlos Tevez scored all of Manchester City's goals in a 3-0 win over West Bromwich Albion, and Louis Saha hit four as Everton beat Blackpool 5-3.

U.S. star Clint Dempsey scored his 10th goal of the season, a header in the 78th minute in Fulham's 2-2 draw at Aston Villa; Niko Kranjcar's injury-time winner gave Tottenham a 2-1 win over Bolton; Stoke topped Sunderland 3-2; and Wigan beat Blackburn 4-3 to climb out of the relegation zone.

Tottenham is even on points with fourth-place Chelsea, which hosts Liverpool in one of two games Sunday.

PARIS (AP) — Marseille defeated Arles-Avignon 1-0 in the French league to pull within five points of leader Lille and keep alive its title hopes.

Andre-Pierre Gignac scored the winning goal with a low shot in the 55th minute. Marseille was booed by its fans at halftime.

Lille tops the standings, four points ahead of PSG. Second-place Paris Saint-Germain played at Rennes later Saturday.

Also, it was: Saint-Etienne 2, Montpellier 1; Nice 1, Sochaux 0; Brest 2, Nancy 1; Lorient 2, Caen 0; Lens 1, Valenciennes 1. On Sunday, Lille visits Auxerre, Lyon hosts Bordeaux and Toulouse faces Monaco.

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Athletic Bilbao downed 10-man Sporting Gijon 3-0 in the Spanish league to move into fifth place ahead of Espanyol, which lost 3-2 at Almeria.

David Lopez put Bilbao in front in the 16th minute on a penalty kick after Sporting's Gregory Arnolin was sent off for his second yellow card. Gaizka Toquero doubled Bilbao's lead in the 27th minute with his third goal in two games. Llorente scored his 13th goal this season in the 74th.

Bilbao has won four straight games, the last time it has done since 1996-97.

Later, Barcelona looks to set a league record with its 16th consecutive victory when it faces Atletico Madrid.

Getafe downed Deportivo La Coruna 4-1; Mallorca tied Osasuna 1-1; and Racing Santander drew 1-1 at Zaragoza.

BERLIN (AP) — Milivoje Novakovic scored twice as Cologne came from two goals down to beat Bayern Munich 3-2 at home in the Bundesliga.

The Slovenian striker tied it in the 62nd minute and scored the winner in the 73rd. He offset first-half goals from Hamit Altintop and Mario Gomez for Bayern. Christian Clemens got Cologne's revival under way in the 55th.

Bayern drops to fifth, 15 points behind leader Borussia Dortmund. Mainz and Hannover are now third and fourth. Cologne remains 16th.

Bayer Leverkusen lost 1-0 at Nuremberg but remains second, 12 points behind Dortmund.

A late penalty kick by Timo Gebhart gave Stuttgart a 3-2 win at Borussia Moenchengladbach. Moenchengladbach remains last, three points behind Stuttgart.

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) — Motherwell and Dundee United advanced to the quarterfinals of the Scottish Cup.

Steve Jones and John Sutton gave Motherwell a 2-0 win at Stranraer, and Dundee United eased past Hamilton 3-1. Two goals by Craig Dargo gave St. Mirren a 2-1 win at Ayr. Adam Rooney and Ritchie Foran each scored twice as Inverness beat Morton 5-1.

Brechin won 2-0 at Buckie Thistle to become the only team from outside the Scottish Premier League to advance. St. Johnstone's game against Partick was rescheduled for Tuesday because of a wet field.

There are two more fifth-round matches Sunday, including Celtic at Glasgow rival Rangers.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Darcy Neto scored once in each half to help Aris defeat host AEK 2-1 in the Greek league.

AEK remains in fourth place, 18 points behind league leader Olympiakos. Aris climbed to sixth.

Iraklis won 2-1 at Panserraikos and Asteras drew 1-1 at home with Larissa.
