Chris Osgood to be sidelined up to eight weeks

DETROIT (Reuters) - Detroit Red Wings backup netminder Chris Osgood was scheduled to undergo hernia surgery Tuesday and would likely be sidelined for six to eight weeks, the NHL's official website (www.nhl.com) said.

Osgood, who shares duties with starter Jimmy Howard, had endured a nagging groin injury most of the season with the pain becoming so severe he took himself out of the lineup Saturday.

The 38-year-old Osgood had won his last two starts and was 5-3-2 this season, posting a 2.77 goals-against average and a .903 save percentage.
