Barca's 10-game win streak ends

Barcelona was tied 0-0 by visiting Athletic Bilbao on Tuesday night in the first leg of the fifth round of Spain's Copa del Rey, a rare slip that ended Barca's 10-game winning streak but extended its unbeaten run to 23 matches.

Lionel Messi and David Villa entered as early second-half substitutes but failed to spark the Blaugrana. The second leg of the total-goals series is at Bilbao on Jan. 5.

"It is a shame because we had been playing well," Barcelona forward Pedro Rodriguez said, "They defended well. It was difficult to find spaces and we lacked precision in our shots.

Heading into the Christmas break, Barcelona has 21 wins, 2 losses and 4 draws in all competitions and has outscored opponents 77-16.

Barcelona is 14-1-1 in La Liga, 4-0-2 in the Champions League, 2-0-1 in the Copa del Rey and 1-1 in the Spanish Super Cup, which it won on aggregate for its first trophy of the season.

The Blaugrana have scored five or more goals seven times, including five occasions in La Liga, where it has a two-point lead over second-place Real Madrid and a 51-9 goal difference. Barcelona has a 10-game league winning streak, five shy of the record set by Real Madrid in 1960-61. With 22 league games remaining, Barcelona is on pace to shatter the La Liga goals record of 107 set by Real Madrid in 1989-90.

Also Tuesday, Valencia and Villarreal played to a 0-0 draw, with American forward Jozy Altidore replacing an injured Marcos Senna in the 72nd minute for the Yellow Submarine. Second-division Cordoba drew 1-1 at home against Deportivo La Coruna.

The Norwegian center back denied the visitors a surprise victory with a header from a free kick that went in off the post in the 84th minute.

Conor Sammon's 12th goal of the league campaign put Kilmarnock ahead in the 54th minute.

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Jefferson Farfan scored in the 84th minute to give Schalke a 1-0 win over second-division leader Augsburg on Tuesday in the round of 16 of the German Cup.

Hoffenheim's Gylfi Sigurdsson and Demba Ba scored in a 2-0 win over last-place Bundesliga team Borussia Moenchengladbach to advance to the quarterfinals.

Two matches were postponed because of icy conditions: Kickers Offenbach vs. Nuremberg and Koblenz vs. Kaiserslautern.

PARIS (AP) — Lorient created numerous chances but lacked a cutting edge in a 0-0 home draw with Montpellier, the teams' final French league game before the winter break.

It was the fifth straight game that Montpellier had failed to win, leaving the team four points behind first-place Lille.

Lille has 31 points, ahead of Paris Saint-Germain and Rennes on goal difference. Lille, which has played two fewer games than Montpellier and Lorient, hosts Saint-Etienne on Wednesday.

Lorient remained 12th with 25 points.
