Memphis starting quarterback Cannon Smith has been arrested on charges of public intoxication and disorderly conduct.
Shelby County Sheriff's Office spokesman Chip Washington said the 23-year-old Smith was booked into the county jail after being arrested at about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Smith is the son of FedEx founder and CEO Frederick Smith. He played in seven games for the Tigers (1-11) after sitting out last season as a transfer from Miami.
WMC-TV reported that Smith refused to pay a taxi fare and became combative.
Memphis coach Larry Porter said in a statement that officials are aware of what happened and are investigating before making any statements or decisions on the player.
