FOXSports.com has learned that California men's basketball coach Mike Montgomery and members of his coaching staff appeared in front of the NCAA's Committee on Infractions Friday in Indianapolis.
According to multiple sources, the Golden Bears are being investigated for impermissible phone calls and have already self-imposed sanctions on the program.
The specifics of the sanctions are unknown at this time.
Calls to Montgomery and members of his staff were not immediately returned to FOXSports.com.
Montgomery, 63, spent 18 seasons at Stanford University, has had a squeaky clean image throughout his career and was a former Chairman of the Ethics Committee.
He left Stanford to become the Golden State Warriors head coach in 2004. However, Montgomery was fired after two seasons in the NBA and after a year off, was hired by Cal in 2008.
Montgomery has led the program to the NCAA tournament in each of his two seasons and the Bears are 5-3 this season with a home game in Berkeley on Sunday afternoon.
