Talor Battle hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 1.3 seconds left and Penn State defeated Mount St. Mary's (Md.) 57-53 on Tuesday night.

The 3 broke a tie at 53, and Battle scored a fourth point on a foul shot after the timeout.

Battle led the Nittany Lions (7-2) with 13 points and eight rebounds, and Jeff Brooks had a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Mount St. Mary's (3-6) was unable to come away with the win despite going on a 16-6 run to open up the second half, pushing the Mountaineers ahead of Penn State 38-37 with just more than 10 minutes remaining.

The game went back and forth, leaving the game tied at 53 with less than 30 seconds left.

Lamar Trice led Mount St. Mary's with 16 points.

The Mountaineers are now 0-9 against Big Ten teams and 0-6 against Penn State since beginning Division I play in 1988-89.

"Good players make shots in those situations," Mount St. Mary's coach Robert Burke said of Battle.

Battle's go-ahead shot was an estimated 26-footer and he said it was his best shot of the night.

"I just shot the ball with some confidence," Battle said. "Thank God it fell."

Battle scored seven of his 13 points in the final 2 minutes of the game. He had been struggling offensively up to that point, finishing the game going 3 for 14 on field goals and 1 for 7 from outside the arc.

But despite his lack of scoring, the Nittany Lions wanted the ball in his hands at the end of the game.

"That's kind of normal for him," Penn State coach Ed DeChellis said. "He didn't really have it for most of the game, but he finds a way to help us win the game. He's a special kid and a special player."

Penn State was playing without starter D.J. Jackson, who was out with a neck injury, and redshirt freshman Billy Oliver, who was out because of concern about a head injury. Both remain day-to-day and it is unclear whether they will play in Sunday's game against Virginia Tech.

Mount St. Mary's was also playing with five of its top nine players out because of injuries.
