Liverpool's new American owners are watching their first match since completing the takeover of the club.

New England Sports Ventures owner John Henry was among the executives from the Boston Red Sox ownership group at fierce local rival Everton for the 214th Merseyside derby on Sunday.

NESV bought the 18-time English champions on Friday after the previous American owners, Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr., were ousted following a week of court battles.

Before the match, NESV chairman Tom Werner said manager Roy Hodgson's job is safe despite Liverpool starting the match in the relegation zone.

Werner says that "nobody can be pleased about the start of the season but the club ought to jell."
