DETROIT (Reuters) - The Colorado Avalanche erased a two-goal deficit and handed the Detroit Red Wings their first loss of the NHL season when Brandon Yip scored in the sixth round of a shootout on Tuesday.
Yip, the only player to score in the shootout, fired a wrist shot past Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard to give Colorado a 5-4 win and a share of top spot in the Northwest division.
Colorado had to battle back from three deficits during the game, including a 3-1 hole after Detroit's Johan Franzen scored his second goal of the game 13 minutes into the second period.
But the Avalanche evened the score when David Jones beat Howard with a backhand shot from the slot with a little over eight minutes left in regulation.
