Marlins' Paulino suspended for doping violation

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Florida Marlins catcher Ronny Paulino has been suspended 50 games after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance, Major League Baseball said on Friday.

Paulino's suspension is effective immediately, ruling him out of Florida's game later on Friday against Houston.

In accordance with MLB's drug prevention and treatment program, the substance involved was not identified.

Paulino, 29, was batting .259 with four home runs and 37 runs batted in this season.

The suspension followed news of Thursday that former MLB pitcher Roger Clemens was indicted for lying to the U.S. Congress when he denied using performance-enhancing drugs.
