Nationals put RHP Luis Atilano on 15-day DL, Ross Detwiler to start Sunday

The Washington Nationals have placed right-hander Luis Atilano on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 21, because of bone chips in his pitching elbow.

Nationals senior vice president and general manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement Friday night before the Nationals opened a three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Atilano, a 25-year-old rookie, is 6-7 with a 5.15 ERA in 16 starts this season.

Ross Detwiler, a 24-year-old left-hander, will be called up from Triple-A Syracuse to start Sunday in place of Atilano.

Detwiler was 2-2 with a 2.48 ERA in seven starts for Syracuse. It will be his third stint with Washington. He was 1-6 in 14 starts last season.
