NEW YORK (Reuters) - San Diego manager Bud Black was rewarded with a three-year extension Monday for steering the Padres to the best record in the National League.
Black agreed to a deal through 2013 with club options for the next two seasons.
"This news comes at a time when the team is playing well, but my faith in Bud goes far beyond wins and losses," general manager Jed Hoyer said in a statement.
"He and his staff are exceptionally well prepared, he embraces the challenge of teaching young players and, most importantly, the players compete for him every night."
Black, 53, who joined San Diego in November 2006 after seven seasons as Los Angeles Angels pitching coach, has guided the Padres to first place in the NL West with a 54-37 record.
