NNS: Busch Scores In GWC Finish At Chicagoland

Despite dominating the race, Kyle Busch appeared to have little shot at winning Friday night’s Dollar General 300 Nationwide Series event at Chicagoland Speedway.

Busch led 107 of the race’s first 146 laps despite being penalized early for speeding on pit road.

Later in the race, however, Joey Logano, Busch’s Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, took over the top spot as Busch struggled with handling issues.

The race ended with a green-white-checkered finish, however, and Busch was strong enough on that run to push past Logano for the win.

“It wasn’t easy,” Busch said. “We didn’t have the track position when it mattered, and the car got really, really tight. But these guys didn’t give up.”

The race finish was set up with three laps to go when Trevor Bayne blew a tire and slammed into the wall, forcing the night’s last caution flag. That sent the race into overtime.

Lining up to take the final green flag, Logano led Brad Keselowski, David Reutimann, Busch and Brian Scott. Keselowski, the series point leader, ran out of fuel seconds before the restart, however, and pitted.

That moved Busch up into position to challenge Logano on the restart, and he moved around his teammate on the outside as they approached the white flag.

A multi-car wreck occurred behind the leaders, but they had already taken the white flag, and the race officially ended under caution with Busch in front.

The win was his seventh of the season.

“I knew I couldn’t spin my tires and knew I couldn’t let him [Logano] force me too high,” Busch said of the final restart. “It was dirty up there. I was able to keep it low enough to stay out of that and get in front of Joey.”

Keselowski fell to 21st position after refueling.

Danica Patrick lost a lap to the leaders early and finished 24th.
