Boston puts Varitek on disabled list with broken foot

BOSTON (Reuters) - The Boston Red Sox placed captain Jason Varitek on the 15-day disabled list after the veteran catcher suffered a broken right foot in a recent game, the team said on Friday.

The three-times All-Star injured his foot after a foul tip off the bat of a Tampa Bay player during Wednesday's game and became the latest injured member of the Red Sox.

The 38-year-old Varitek, who has a .263 batting average this season with seven home runs and 16 RBIs, was expected to assume every day catching duties after Victor Martinez broke his left thumb last week.

In addition to Varitek and Martinez, the Red Sox also have regulars Jacoby Ellsbury, Dustin Pedroia and Josh Beckett on the disabled list.
