TORONTO (Reuters) - A Canadian company has paid more than $1 million for the white and red jersey worn by Paul Henderson when he scored the winning goal for Canada in the 1972 Summit Series against the Soviet Union.
Footage of Henderson's goal, scored with just over 30 seconds left in the final period of the hotly-contested series, remains among the best-known in hockey.
The owner of a private real-estate development company near Toronto paid about $1.3 million for the jersey, making it the highest price paid at auction for a game-worm sports uniform, according to Classic Auctions, which handled the sale.
Classic Auctions said on Wednesday that Henderson's jersey is just the fourth sports memorabilia item to sell for more than $1 million, and the only one outside of Major League Baseball.
The jersey joins Mark McGwire's then-record 70th home run ball, a 1909 Honus Wagner baseball card, and Babe Ruth's home run bat from the opening game at the original Yankee Stadium in 1923, in the $1 million-plus club.
