NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Cleveland Indians activated closer Kerry Wood from the disabled list on Friday and hope the return of the two-times All-Star will help the struggling team get back on track after a slow start to the season.
The 32-year-old right-hander has not appeared yet this season while dealing with back strain, and Cleveland, losers of four straight, trail AL Central Division-leading Minnesota by eight games.
Chris Perez took over closing duties during Wood's absence and collected four saves.
To make room on the roster for Wood, the Indians sent right-handed reliever Jensen Lewis to Triple-A Columbus.
