Ramirez homers, Marlins beat Miami Hurricanes 19-3

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Hanley Ramirez tried out an aluminum bat in batting practice Wednesday, then used wood to hit a three-run homer on the second pitch to him in spring training, and the Florida Marlins beat the Miami Hurricanes 19-3.

Ramirez singled in the third inning to finish 2 for 2 and scored twice. He borrowed one of the Hurricanes' aluminum bats before the game, hit several balls over the fence and said he liked the bat.

"On offense, yeah. When I'm playing defense, no," the All-Star shortstop said.

A dozen Hurricanes clustered around Ramirez for a chat during batting practice. His message to the youngsters?

"This is the show, the big leagues," he said. "When you get up here, you can have whatever you want. So just keep working hard."

Dan Uggla had a double and a single off the wall in two at-bats. Jai Miller added a three-run homer for the Marlins, who pounded out 20 hits.

Starter Ricky Nolasco was the winner, allowing one hit and no walks in two innings. Of his 23 pitches, he threw 16 for strikes.

Hurricanes freshman starter Jerad Grundy gave up six runs in 2 2-3 innings.
