George Washington pulled out of her forward-operating port of Yokosuka, Japan Sept. 19 to continue her 2011 patrol. As the Navy’s only full-time forward deployed carrier, George Washington’s mission is to help ensure security and stability in the western Pacific Ocean.

Nov. 11, 2011: An F/A-18+ Hornet assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 87 releases flares while flying the missing man formation in remembrance of Capt. Tushar Tembe, commanding officer of USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75).

Tembe died Nov. 8 and previously served as commanding officer of VFA-87. VFA-87 is part of the George H.W. Bush Carrier Strike Group deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility on its first operational deployment conducting maritime security operations and support missions as part of Operations Enduring Freedom and New Dawn.

The commander of Air Combat Command directed a stand down of the fleet May 3, 2011, as a safety precaution, following 12 separate reported incidents where pilots experienced hypoxia-like symptoms.

4 Boresight

Fleet Week

Oct. 7, 2011: Aircraft, vehicles and helicopters rest on the flight deck of the USS Bonhomme Richard, LHD, Oct. 7, San Francisco. During San Francisco Fleet Week 2011, people can tour the ship and the military aircraft and vehicles. 5 F-35B Lightning II

Oct. 3, 2011: An F-35B Lightning II makes the first vertical landing on a flight deck at sea aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1). The F-35B is the Marine Corps Joint Strike Force variant of the Joint Strike Fighter and is designed for short takeoff and vertical landing on Navy amphibious ships.
